Updating Your Contributor Profile

Some of you are familiar with WordPress/Gravatar or already have your own account and profile picture, so you won’t need this guide. However, if you want to customize your profile and don’t know how, then please follow the steps below:

1. Log in and go to your profile. In this case, I am logging in with the username “testcontributor”:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.55.14 PM

2. After clicking “Profile,” scroll down to the “About Yourself” section. Click the link for en.gravatar.com (unfortunately, directly uploading an image here is buggy):Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.55.33 PM

3. Get to the Gravatar page and click “Sign in”:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.56.12 PM

4. Create a WordPress.com account (not to be confused with wordpress.org, which is what we use) with the email address associated with your contributor account. Submit a username different from the one associated with your contributor account. In this case, the username is “testcontributor” which did not work, so I made it “testcontributor1234. We’ll go back and change this later:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.57.19 PMScreen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.57.43 PM

5. Activate your WordPress.com account through your email:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.59.20 PM

6. Sign in to Gravatar with your newly created WordPress.com account:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.59.26 PM

7. After signing in, add your Gravatar by clicking “Add one by clicking here!”:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 9.59.58 PM

8. Select your method of uploading your image:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.00.03 PM

9. Upload your image and then crop to fit:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.00.19 PM

10. Select the rating for your image:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.00.30 PM

11. Your image is associated with your email address. However, you will also need to associate it with your username. Select “My Profile” at the top of the page:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.00.40 PM

12. This is where you will change your username to the one that matches your contributor account. Here, I am changing “testcontributor1234” to “testcontributor”:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.00.46 PMScreen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.00.51 PM

13. Save your Gravatar profile and go back to your contributor account profile page. Your profile picture should now show up:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.01.15 PM

14. Fill out your biography. Please include your home university, host university, time/year/semester you were abroad, and study abroad program you went through:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.01.37 PM

15. Fill out your social media links if you wish. You don’t need to type in the entire URL – just include your username for each of those platforms:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.02.03 PM

16. Scroll down to update your profile. It should now look something like this:Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.02.18 PM

Basically, Gravatar is a way to store your profile pictures and associate them directly with your email address, so that if you end up writing for other blogs/sites, you won’t have to upload a profile picture each time. Hopefully this guide helped you a bit, as I found the process quite unintuitive.

Thanks so much!
